Not everybody loves Spring Cleaning, and we’re especially counting those who faithfully engage in this time-honored (or weary) ritual.
Some so detest the idea of spring cleaning that they either hire it out or do all the steps involved, over time, but just call it something else. Then it doesn’t seem or feel quite as loathsome.
Still, what if there was a way to engage in spring cleaning and feel better about doing it? You know, maybe even look (slightly) forward to it? Ah, now wouldn’t that be a triumph for positive thinking and energy!
Think it can’t be done? Well, before you declare this experiment a failure, first try your hand at the following:
- Visualize those squeaky clean windows welcoming in the morning (not mourning) sun.
- Visualize those uncluttered spaces in your closets and storage areas — free of dust bunnies, grease and grime.
- Imagine a your kitchen sparkling clean, with everything in its place, and a place for everything.
- Now smell that fresh, clean spring fragrance wafting its way throughout your entire home, and not what usually comes wafting through, especially from the direction of your kids’ bedrooms.
Starting to feel it? Awesome, but still you’re only halfway there. All set? Here’s the rest of it:
Step 1: Build a Spring Cleaning Tool Box
Use a bucket or shower caddie – with a handle — and fill it with all your cleaning supplies. This will help keep everything handy, in one place, and help speed up the process. No need to go back and forth endlessly.
Step 2: Get everyone involved
Invite the whole family to be part of your “special crew”. Give kids their own supplies, work-related garb, and special cleaning assignments. And let them know there’s a reward when their job is complete.
Step 3: Pump up the volume
Create a playlist of favorite tunes and watch everyone get into the moment! Be sure to select fun, upbeat tunes and make sure there’s something for everyone!
Step 4: Take short breaks
Don’t try to accomplish everything at once. Build in snack and rest breaks throughout the day. For larger cleaning projects divide the work over two days or more.
Step 5: Reward the Team
Pick an incentive everyone will enjoy once you’ve completed the job. Treat your team to a movie the family’s been waiting to see, plan a special meal at their favorite restaurant, or have a “thank you” pizza party!
Spring cleaning may never be number one on your “favorite things to do” list, but it doesn’t have to be a downer, either.
