If you look hard enough, you’re bound to find a commemorative day for just about anything. For example, did you know that in April alone, we have Pillow Fight Day, Cheese Fondue Day, Talk like Shakespeare Day, and even Eggs Benedict Day? And while some observances are fun, tasty, or just downright odd, we occasionally encounter those that are momentous.
Take Earth Day, for example. Created 45 years ago and celebrated every year on April 22nd, the founders and supporters of Earth Day 1970 had one simple objective – to save the environment. And what started with 22 million Americas demanding that politicians and corporations put the environment at the forefront of their agendas has only intensified over the years.
Today, Earth Day is celebrated in schools, businesses, and communities across the globe, with countless opportunities for everyone to get involved. So if you’re looking for something meaningful to do this Earth Day.
here are 5 simple ideas.
- Plant something. Whether it’s a tree, an expansive garden, or a single flower, getting your hands into soil connects you with nature and helps make the world a prettier and healthier place to live.
- Have a school or neighborhood swap. One man’s trash is another man’s treasure, so before you toss that old window frame or your son’s outgrown soccer cleats, see if someone else might be able to put them to good use.
- Unplug, physically and mentally. Commit using as few electronics as possible on Earth Day, and unplug those that are not in use. Enjoy the outdoors with your loved ones, have dinner at a park, or wake up early to watch the sunrise.
- Make one positive change. Maybe you’ve been thinking about eating more locally grown and organic produce, or looking at ways to keep your lawn lush and green without the use of chemical pesticides. Perhaps you think it’s finally time to break your disposable water bottle habit.
- Engage in a fun Earth Day project. If you have little ones at home, teach them about the importance of caring for and respecting nature. Spread some all-natural seed or nut butter on a pinecone, roll it in bird seed, and hang it from a tree branch. And instead of buying gift wrap, have your kids finger paint old newspapers that you can use for those gift-giving occasions.
