Every year our nation observes National Poison Prevention Week in March. But no matter when you might be reading this blog, we invite you to stay with us. After all, poison prevention is a non-stop concern.
What can do at home to keep family members safe, especially small children? Start by making a list of everything on your premises that could be poisonous. Then, keep that list handy for ongoing review and emphasis.
Here are some likely inclusions:
- Batteries
- Bug sprays
- Fertilizers & weed killers
- Chemical cleaning solutions
- Medicines, prescription and otherwise
- Nail polish and nail polish remover
- Other health & beauty products
- Certain household plants
- Paint and paint remover
All such products should be kept out of harm’s way or properly disposed of if they’ve outlived their usefulness. Here are some additional steps you can take to keep your family safe from harm:
- Don’t mix two or more poisonous substances together…the combination can create noxious gases.
- Be sure the child safety caps on medicines are secured after each use.
- Turn on a light when giving or taking medicine to prevent accidental overdoses or taking the wrong drugs.
- Keep all prescription drugs in their labeled containers prevent accidental ingestion.
- Carefully adhere to your pharmacist’s or doctor’s dosage instructions.
- Do not take or allow your children to take prescription meds obtained from someone else.
- Install low-level carbon monoxide detectors throughout your home, preferably those that alert you when the batteries are running low.
- Have all gas appliances periodically inspected for CO emissions.
- Keep the poison control hotline phone number handy for all family members and baby sitters to access when needed: 1-800-222-1222.
