You’ve heard of Black Friday; the day throngs of shoppers descend on stores in pursuit of the best sales. But have you ever heard of Brown Friday? It’s the day hordes of plumbers are dispatched across the nation to deal with the ugly aftermath of those delicious Thanksgiving Day feasts.
While you’re busy hosting family and friends for Thanksgiving, your home’s plumbing system is trying to keep up with the much higher demand. Luckily, there are several steps you can take to keep your plumbing system from becoming overloaded. Follow these tips to keep your garbage disposal, sinks, and toilets problem-free.
In the Kitchen
- Avoid putting starchy or fibrous food like corn cobs, bones, potato skins, and onion peels down the garbage disposal. Instead, toss them in the compost bin or in the trash.
- Don’t pour grease, oils, or fats down the drain, as they could solidify and block it up. Place cooled, fatty oils and grease into containers, and throw them in with the garbage.
- Wipe off any excess grease from pots and pans with a paper towel before washing them by hand or putting them in the dishwasher.
- Scrape leftover food from plates, pots, and pans into the trash—instead of the kitchen disposal. If you have to use the disposal for a few things, make sure to run the faucet at the same time.
In the Bathroom
- Don’t let guests flush feminine products, wet wipes, dental floss, and cotton balls down the toilet. Anything that’s not waste or toilet paper can clog up the toilet and cause it to overflow.
- Make sure you have a wastebasket in every bathroom.
- Ask overnight guests to space out their showers by about 10 to 15 minutes so the drains have an opportunity to do their job.
- Place a shower strainer over shower and bathtub drains to collect hair.
- Place a toilet plunger in each bathroom so that toilet clogs can be tended to quickly (and discreetly).
Protect Your Plumbing Year-Round
Sink drains, shower and tub drains, toilets, and main line sewer drains collect debris over time that puts them at risk for clogging. Having drains cleared in advance of the holidays can free up potential clogs before they ruin the festivities.
