Think about the various household cleaning products you use on a regular basis: window cleaner, mold and mildew remover, carpet deodorizer, stain remover, not to mention dish soap and laundry detergent. Not only do they all take up Borax a lot of precious cabinet space, keeping yourself fully stocked isn’t cheap. What’s more, these products often contain harsh chemicals.
Enter Borax – a time trusted product that can replace bottles of chemical-filled household cleaners. Here are just a few ways you can use this inexpensive powder around the house.
Laundry Detergent –
Borax kills mold, mildew, and banishes odors, making it a perfect ingredient in DIY laundry detergent. Just mix two parts borax, two parts washing soda, and one part grated soap. Use 1/8 of a cup per load.
Laundry Stain Remover –
With a pH level of 9.5, borax naturally breaks down stains on fabric. Add borax to a bucket of water and soak the garment for 30 minutes or more, than launder as usual.
Cookware Cleaner – Banish dried, stuck-on grease from cookware by rubbing a bit of borax on the item with a damp cloth, then rinse and clean with your soap of choice.
Tile and Grout Cleaner – Keep mold and mildew at bay with borax and a little elbow grease. Cover tiled showers and floors with borax and scrub with a soft bristle brush or sponge, then rinse clean to reveal sparkling clean tiles and grout.
Carpet Freshener – Carpets hold on to lots of odors, but you can win the battle against stink by sprinkling borax on your carpets and area rugs, letting it sit for one hour, and vacuuming thoroughly before allowing kids and pets on the carpets.
Drain Un-clogger – Next time you get a pesky clog, pour one-half cup of borax into the drain and immediately follow with two to four cups of boiling water. Let it sit for 30 minutes before flushing with clean water.
Outdoor Furniture Sanitizer – Get your outdoor furniture ready for the season with a little help from borax. Whether it’s plastic, fabric, or wood, you can safely use a borax soap mixture to clean off dirt, mold, and bacteria. Use a bristle brush to scrub hard surfaces clean, or a sponge for outdoor cushions. Let the mixture soak the cushions for 15 to 30 minutes, rinse with clean water, and air dry thoroughly before use.
While borax works well on most clogged drains, it can’t unclog them all. So, when your best DIY efforts come up empty, contact Norhio Plumbing for a job well done – every time.
