Here’s a question we get asked all the time, and yet in most circumstances, our response is less than definitive.
The question: “How long will or should my Water Heater last?”
These are our two most common replies:
- “It’s not repairable, here’s why, and it needs to be replaced now.” Or,
- “It’s difficult to say since there are a number of relevant factors that impact on that decision.”
Here, for example, a few such factors that need to be considered:
- System quality
- System type (gas, gas tankless, electric, or heat pump)
- The quality of the installation
- Frequency of usage
- Water quality
Ongoing Maintenance Helps Your System Last Longer
Water heaters that are thoroughly checked once a year are likely to outlast those that aren’t. In fact, that’s one claim you can take to the bank. With a qualified and licensed plumber looking after your water heater for you, small issues can be taken care of before they become big and costly problems.
Here’s another factor to keep in mind: continuous flow (tankless) water heaters generally outlast storage tank models since the former don’t store water. Rather, they heat it “on demand” as you turn on a tap or a hot-water-using appliance. No storage tank means less chance of internal corrosion, especially if you have hard water conditions at home.
Estimated life expectancy of a hot water tank
- Glass or enamel lined tanks: Up to 12 years
- Stainless steel tanks: Up to 12 years
- Heat pumps: Up to 12 years
- Gas tankless: 15-20 years
