Popsicles, not pipes, are meant to be frozen. We can all agree on that, right? So, applying the same logic, let’s agree that you’ll want to do everything you can to Prevent Frozen Pipes mess in your home.
Norhio Plumbing is pleased to show you how.
- Insulate pipes in your crawl spaces and attic. Exposed pipes are most susceptible to freezing. Remember, the more insulation you apply, the less prone your pipes will be to freeze.
- Heat tape or thermostatically controlled heat cables can be used to wrap pipes. Be sure to use products approved by an independent testing organization, such as Underwriters Laboratories. Closely follow all manufacturers’ instructions.
- Seal leaks that allow cold air inside near where pipes are located. Search for leaks around electrical wiring, dryer vents, and pipes, and use caulk or insulation to keep the cold out. Even a tiny leak can cause big trouble.
- A trickle of hot and cold water might be all it takes to keep your pipes from freezing. Let warm water drip overnight, preferably from a faucet on an outside-facing wall.
- Keep your thermostat set at the same temperature day and night. Lowering your thermostat at night can cause more harm than good, where the added risk of a frozen pipe outweighs the few dollars you might save on your heating bill.
- If you plan to be away during cold weather, leave the heat on in your home, set to a temperature no lower than 55° F.
- Open cabinet doors to allow heat to warm un-insulated pipes under sinks and appliances near exterior walls.
