It’s also a time when preparation is key. You know, like getting a jump on your holiday shopping, making sure your home is ready for winter, and more.

- Prep for the holidays. Planning on entertaining? Check a few things off your to-do list now, like having your knives professionally sharpened, polishing your silver, and washing or ironing your special occasion linens.
- Check floor protectors on furniture. Don’t let chairs, tables, and other pieces damage your beautiful hardwood floors as they’re moved around. Check the feet of movable pieces and add or replace pads if necessary.
- Inspect stairs, rails, and paths. Reduce the risk of slips and falls by walking around your home’s exterior and making sure all stairs and railings are sturdy and secure.
- Cover exterior gaps. Take a walk around your home’s exterior and look for any cracks or gaps that could allow mice and other critters indoor access.
- Inspect the sump pump. Check for blockages or damage to ensure your basement stays dry even on the rainiest of days.
- Deep-clean the bathrooms. Plan to deep clean bathrooms 5-7 days before entertaining so you can do a quick wipe down on the day of the gathering. You’ll free up much-needed time and your bathrooms will still look spotless.
- Repair tub and shower caulk. Inspect the caulk around your bathtub or shower and repair it to prevent water from penetrating.
- Tend to plumbing issues. Don’t wait until you have 30 people in your house to tend to that slow drain or leaky toilet.
- Check downspouts and gutters. One final raking of the lawn can’t hurt, and neither can ensuring that gutters and downspouts are clear to prevent winter ice jams.
- Prepare for winter. Check snow shovels and ice scrapers and replace if necessary. Restock pet-safe ice melt. Have your snow blower serviced or, if you hire someone to remove snow and ice, contact them to ensure you’re still on their list.
