In this day and age, it’s rather hard to be truly caught off guard by the weather – that is, unless you never watch TV, listen to the radio, hop on the web, or read the newspaper. That’s especially during the Winter Storm months, where it sometimes feels like the weather is the only topic worthy of human discourse.
Still, talk about the weather all we want, not all of us are properly prepared in case any of the doomsday forecasts actually pans out. That’s what we’re here for: Norhio Plumbing. Offering you the following tips for winter storm preparation with the hope that you’ll find one or more new ideas worthy of follow up.
- Keep emergency supplies, clothing, and tools in you your car should you get stranded during a storm. Include bottled water, warm blankets, extra hats, scarves, and gloves, a flashlight and extra batteries, and some sand and a shovel to help provide extra traction should you get stuck in the snow or ice.
- Have a fully stocked emergency kit at home including flashlights, batteries, a battery powered radio, blankets, bottled water, and enough non-perishable food to sustain you and your family for at least a few days.
- Restock on sand, rock salt, or other products to help melt ice on your walkways.
- Make sure you have a few shovels and enough gasoline for you gas-powered snow removal equipment.
- If you have a wood burning fireplace or stove, keep plenty of dry, seasoned wood on hand. But preferably, not in your home, as that’s an easy way to let rodents in too. Bring in only as much wood as you need at any given time.
- Have a Family Emergency Plan in place – and well-practiced – so everyone knows their role if and when you lose power or become separated during a storm. Also, find out where your town sets up shelters in case of a power outage.
- Don’t forget about your pets. Have an adequate amount of food and clean drinking water on hand for them.
- While the storm is slamming away, don’t go outdoors unless you really must. You not only put your life at risk, but the lives of those who might need to come to your rescue.
You know what else Mother Nature is fond of doing? Causing unheated and un-insulated pipes to freeze and sometimes crack and burst – that’s what!
