Laundry Detergent
To replace your commercial brand, all you need are 3 simple ingredients: Fels-Naptha, borax, and washing soda. Grate a bar of Fels-Naptha and mix with a cup of borax along with a cup of washing soda in a blender or food processor for several minutes, until it reaches a fine powder consistency. Keep it in a sealed container and add 1 tablespoon to every load of laundry, or 2 to 3 tablespoons for heavily soiled loads.

Window Cleaner
Just mix 1/4 cup of vinegar, 1/4 cup rubbing alcohol, and 2 cups of water in a clean spray bottle. Give it a shake and get ready to see those windows and mirrors sparkle like new.

Dish Soap
Pour 1 ¾ cups of boiling water into a bowl. Grate a tablespoon of bar soap and add that along with 1 tablespoon of borax to the hot water. Whisk until the soap and borax have melted and allow the mixture to cool for a few hours. As it cools, the mixture will gel, allowing you to pour it into an empty detergent bottle and store it for ongoing use.

Drain Cleaner
Commercial drain cleaners can do some serious damage to your plumbing pipes. If you have a clogged drain, simply pour a cup of baking soda into the drain, followed by 1/2 cup of vinegar. Cover the drain with a plate to prevent the bubbles from rising into the sink. Let that mixture sit for 30 minutes, then flush it with hot water until the drain runs clear.
- All-Purpose Cleaner
Here’s how to make cleaning counters, floors, and other solid (non-porous) surfaces a breeze. Just pour 1/2 cup of vinegar into a spray bottle and add 2 tablespoons of baking soda, 10 drops of tea tree oil, and fill the rest with water. Give it a quick shake to mix all the ingredients and you’re good to go. - Insecticidal Plant Spray
Don’t let your houseplants fall victim to insects. Just add 1 tablespoon of liquid dish soap to a quart of water in a spray bottle. Shake it before each use.
