It’s estimated that more than 60% of American households include at least one Pet Care , and most people consider their pet a full-fledged member of the family. In addition to providing companionship, pets offer countless physical, mental, and emotional health benefits, from reducing one’s risk of heart attack, to enhancing social skills.
Here are a few other benefits of owning a pet, especially a dog or cat:
- More chances to walk outdoors
- Reduced blood pressure
- Reduced stress
- More opportunities to meet new people
- Reduced loneliness
There’s a great deal pets do for humans, and a great deal you can do to help make your home more pet friendly. Here are just a few examples.
Safety First
Make sure your home is free of hazards. Keep medications and cleaning products in a locked cabinet or closet, conceal electrical wires, keep window treatment cords out of reach, and don’t keep any poisonous plants or flowers where your pet can reach them. Inspect your home from your pet’s eye view to ensure that anything dangerous is well out of reach.
A Little Privacy, Please
Like humans, pets need some time and space of their one – a spot where they can sleep, relax, or simply escape the hustle and bustle.
Limit Their Access
While cats and dogs need space to chase balls, roll excitedly around and play tug of war, there are still likely to be areas where their access is denied. Set the boundaries sooner than later.
Mud Room
Unless you want dirt, mud, ice and snow all over your home and furniture, use your mud room or a converted space where your dog or cat can be wiped down before gaining full entry.
Keep Your Pet Lean
Obesity is the number one nutritional disease seen in pets currently and studies have shown that being overweight or obese can shorten a dog or cat’s life span by as much as two years. Why? Being overweight or obese puts your pet at risk of joint disease, heart disease and diabetes, among other things.
Keep Them Clean
Brushing their teeth, combing their coats and providing them with healthy food all keeps your pets in good health. To stay on track with responsible pet care, put hygiene and grooming tasks on your calendar and try combining tasks, such as a comforting comb after trimming nails, until it becomes routine.
The Aging Process
Keep your pet’s age in mind. If arthritis and stiff joints are making it difficult for them to navigate stairs or otherwise move around, consider installing a ramp outside your front door and making other adjustments to help reduce their pain.
