Who wants to hold their own nose – because you have to! – inside your own kitchen? No one we know.
Still, kitchens sometimes stink, and the offending odor often emanates from the drain or garbage disposal. The most likely cause is bacteria from food trapped by oil, fat, or grease stuck to the inside of your pipes. Leave it alone along enough, and sooner or later you’ll also have a blocked drain on your hands.
Here are several ways to resolve the problem:
- Baking soda and vinegar – Pour half a cup each baking soda and distilled white vinegar down your drain and let it sit for thirty minutes. After that, pour a tea kettle full of boiling hot water down the drain to finish the job.
- Use an organic drain clearing solution – By pouring such a mixture down the drain, you’re likely to remove the obstruction that’s causing the odor. Organic drain cleaning products also don’t pollute and help prevent internal pipe corrosion.
- Deodorize your garbage disposal. Start by letting a sink full of hot, soapy water flush through the garbage disposal while it’s running. If that doesn’t work on its own, put a stopper in the sink and fill it with several inches of hot water. Add a squirt of dish soap. Turn on the disposal and unplug the sink to let the water flush through.
- Ice cubes, salt & lemons. If the odor is still there, it’s time to bring out the heavy artillery: ice cubes, salt and lemons. First, throw a few ice cubes and a handful of salt down the disposal. The ice helps knock food off the grinder while the salt scrubs the sides. For good measure, we repeat the flushing and then ground up a few lemon peels for freshness.
