Well, put the cards away and instead, try one or all of these three cool winter experiments with your kids. They’re fun, easy, and even educational. But don’t worry, that can be our little secret.
Bubbles – You might think of blowing bubbles as a summertime activity. But when exposed to freezing temps, bubbles turn into magical crystal balls. Using a store-bought or home-made bubble solution, blow bubbles onto an outdoor surface like a patio table or deck railing. Then watch as it freezes and forms beautiful, intricate patterns. And here’s a tip: If you want to make sure your bubbles don’t shatter quickly, add a little white corn syrup to the bubble solution.
Colorful Ice Balls – Add a few drops of food coloring into a balloon and slowly fill it with water. Tie the balloon and place it outside to freeze. Once the water is completely frozen, carefully remove the balloon to reveal your very own ice ball. Brighten up a dreary day by lining them up on either side of the pathway leading to your front door. But pour a little water around the base of the ball to freeze it in place so it doesn’t roll away.
Ice Sculptures – You don’t have to be an artist to make your very own ice sculpture. Simply fill a juice or milk carton with cold water and place in your freezer or outside to freeze. Then carefully pull the carton away to expose a block of ice. Place the block on a rimmed cookie sheet and sprinkle it with coarse salt. Then follow that by adding a few drops of food coloring. As the salt melts the ice block, the colors will trickle down through the ice, creating a magical, one-of-a-kind stream of color.
