Electric Hybrid Heat Pump Water Heaters
Try to say that five times fast! Never mind, because even if you can, you still won’t have learned anything about this truly innovative means of heating water.
Several years ago, the federal government mandated that electric water heaters with a capacity of 50 gallons or greater be converted to hybrid units – heated in part by ambient air and when that air becomes unsuited to that purposes (below 40 degrees and above 90 degrees F), the electricity mode takes over.
The purpose of hybrid systems then and now is energy conservation – and we can tell you from experience that hybrid units have lived up to all the pre-launch hype.
Here are just some of the benefits they offer: | Heat Pump
- Perfect for homes without a natural or propane gas supply but need a large storage capacity unit.
- They work like a refrigerator in reverse. Instead of moving warm air out, they bring in air within a prescribed temperature range and heat it to just the right temperature.
- Once the ambient air falls below 40 degrees or above 90 degrees, the unit immediately converts to the electricity model.
- Hybrid systems must be installed in an area of your home with a minimum of 1,000 cubic feet.
- Most hybrid systems are equipped with Wi-Fi-enabled smart controls that allow you to schedule peak times for usage or extended downtimes. They also can be synced to a phone app so that if you’re going on vacation, you can tell them when you’re coming home so you’ll have plenty of hot water when you return.
- The expected lifespan of a hybrid water heater is 15 years, so with proper maintenance, you will return and recoup your investment, including installation, in roughly 4 to 7 years. After that, you are essentially heating your water for free, minus the reduced utility costs. Plus, the system will still give you several years of faithful service while your warranty remains in effect.
