Grease is a liquid, right? So of course it’s okay to toss it in the sink and down the drain. And while you’re at it, throw in a little liquid fat and cooking oil for good luck. Then just give the sink and drain a good rinsing and your after-dinner clean-up is done!
Did all that sound okay to you? We certainly hope not, because it’s NOT okay to pour FOG (fat, oil and grease) down the drain or your garbage disposal. That’s because none of them will remain liquids for very long. Once they solidify, they look for a nice comfy resting place inside your pipes. And there they sit until joined by more FOG and, together, they put up a formidable blockade.
You can imagine what happens from there.
So, take our advice and dispose of FOG in an old coffee can or some other disposable container with a lid on it. Then place it in the trash. Oh, and if you’re thinking that if not the drain, then how about the toilet? That’s another big no-no.
More Clogged Drain Prevention Tips
FOG substances aren’t the only things capable of clogging up a drain or toilet. Here’s what else should be disposed in the trash:
- Food scraps
- Meat bones
- Fibrous foods like onion skin, celery, green beans and more
- Egg shells
- Pasta
- Rice
- Flour
- Coffee grounds
- Cleaning solutions (murder on your pipes)
As for your toilet, it’s much simpler to let you know what IS okay to flush: human waste and toilet paper only. Not animal feces, paper towels, flushable wipes, cigarette butts, feminine napkins, or anything else. Otherwise, you’re almost literally asking for trouble.
