- Leave the affected faucets on. If theproblem isn’t too bad, you could have your pipe thawed in a matter of minutes. But whether it takes minutes or considerably longer, leaving the affected faucets on will help in the thawing process and help prevent the pipe from freezing again.
- Grab your hair dryer, and get to work. A hair dryer or heat gun, for that matter, are ideal for thawing a frozen pipe. Just be careful not to place either directly on the pipe, and then gently move one or the other back and forth while evenly applying the heat across the frozen surface.
- Wrap the pipe or heat the space. Once again, the object is to make sure that you don’t have to keep thawing the same pipe. You can accomplish that goal by wrapping a single layer of heat tape over the entire pipe and then plugging it in. If there are other pipes in the same location – like your garage or crawl space – then you also might want to consider heating the entire space, at least overnight, with a space heater or heat lamp.
