There are certain things you just expect to work. Heck, you might even take them for granted. That is, until they don’t quite work as expected – or not at all.
Take your plumbing, for example. What happens when you turn on the kitchen tap or showerhead and all that comes out is a trickle? Sure, you still have water. But at the rate it’s coming out, you can barely rinse the soap off your hands.
Is the problem low water pressure, or something else? Here are a few good ways to find out.
Low Water Pressure Everywhere
If you barely get a trickle no matter which sink, tub, or shower you try, you have a whole-house water pressure problem. First, check with your neighbors to see if they are experiencing the same inconvenience. If so, there might be a water main issue in your neighborhood that is impacting your street. If your neighbors’ water pressure is fine, confirm that the main shut off valve is open all the way and that there is no leak in the main. Check the garage or basement for any signs of a leak, then head outside to where the main meets the local water supply. See signs of water? If so, it’s time to contact a professional.
Low Pressure in Specific Fixtures
If you notice low water pressure in a fixture or two, the problem might be the fixture itself. If it’s a sink faucet, unscrew the nozzle and check for buildup on the aerator. Clean off any gunk and soak the aerator in a water/vinegar solution. If that doesn’t do the trick, you might need a new aerator. If the problem is in your shower, unscrew the head and soak it in a water/vinegar solution or replace if necessary. Still experiencing poor performance? The problem could be a clog in the line to the sink or shower – another situation when calling a plumber is probably your best bet.
Low Pressure with Hot Water
When the problem is low pressure from hot water outputs only, the culprit could be your water heater. First, make sure the shut-off valve is open all the way. If opening it doesn’t help – or if it’s already open – contact a plumber to evaluate the water heater and repair or replace as necessary.
