During the long, cold winter months, it’s not uncommon to let some things slide in favor of curling up under a warm blanket and binge-watching your favorite shows. Perhaps you’ve taken a break from regular exercise, have been eating a little too much “comfort food”, or aren’t as bothered by the dust bunnies and cobwebs as you normally would be.
Luckily, Home for Spring comes along just in the nick of time to nudge us outside for some much needed fresh air and sunshine. And while you may be ready to welcome spring with open arms, don’t forget to make sure that so is your home. Here are some simple tips for getting your home in top-top shape for the warmer weather ahead.
Deep Clean
Now’s the perfect time to clean those nooks and crannies you’ve been ignoring all winter long. Getting a handle on the accumulating dust not only makes a home feel fresh and clean, but improves air quality as well.
- Thin out closets, either donating or tossing items you no longer need and clothing that doesn’t fit. Take the time to vacuum the inside of the closet and wipe down shelves.
- Vacuum then flip or rotate your mattress and clean the area under your bed thoroughly.
- Hang area rugs outside to air them out and steam clean wall-to-wall carpeting.
- Wash windows inside and out and wash or vacuum window coverings.
Organize
We accumulate an amazing amount of “stuff” – often without trying. Spring is a great time to lighten the load.
- Clear out the pantry and kitchen cabinets, tossing expired items. Wipe down shelves and drawers before organizing the items you keep. Consider investing in storage solutions so that there’s a clear place for everything.
- Organize your home office. Reduce paper clutter by scanning and saving important documents, and use cubbies, bins, and drawer dividers to get desk and bookshelf clutter under control.
- Have children’s toys taken over your home? Especially those long since ignored? Consider involving your kids in selecting a few toys to donate or sell. Perhaps the proceeds can go toward something fun like ice cream for dinner!
- Place seldom-used items in labeled storage bins and move them to the attic or basement.
Repair
Tackle those small repairs before they become costly, more involved fixes.
- Inspect your home’s foundation and basement for signs of water intrusion. Take note of any cracks that weren’t there last year or have gotten bigger. Contact a basement specialist if needed.
- Clear gutters and downspouts so they divert rainwater away from your home’s roof and foundation.
- Inspect all accessible plumbing for signs of leaks or damage.
Keeping an eye on your plumbing is a great thing to do in spring, but just as important the rest of the year. If your water bill suddenly spikes, for example, there’s a strong possibility you have a hidden water leak. If your sink or tub drain gurgles after flushing the toilet, contact Norhio Plumbing to determine if you have a clogged sewer. For that matter, we’re on hand to assist with all your home plumbing needs, even after normal business hours when the need is great.
