Keeping the kids outside and playing is what summer is all about, but how do you keep the mess outside, too? Ah, there’s an art form in and of itself and one we’re pleased to share. Because more fun and less mess for everyone makes mom and dad infinitely happier.
Keep the mess in one place:
When kids get messy doing their thing outdoors, they often want to go back inside with their muddy feet and dirty hands, and then look out floors and whatever they happen to touch. Instead, head them off at the pass by keeping a box or packet of baby pipes within their easy grasp. That way, they can take a quick break from play time to clean up before diving right back into it, thus sparing your indoors their otherwise messy assault. And if they do have to go inside? Depending on their age, you might want to insist on adult supervision.
Scoop and toss:
If you have a painting project, you can buy a package of disposable brushes at a dollar store, or use other household items like cotton balls or a cut up sponge. Paper plates make a good mixing palate, and the dollar store also has plastic table cloths that serve double duty as drop cloths. Scoop it all up at the end and toss.
Prepare the kids:
Before anything messy comes out, explain the rules. Point out the baby wipes and maybe even two buckets of water – one for washing, the other rinsing. Next, show them where and how to dispose of dirty plates and brushes, and who to ask for help. Also, make sure their hair is pulled back, and sleeves are up. To keep the sleeves up, or even dresses or loose shirts from falling in the paint, sauce, or clay, use a rubber band. Bunch up the extra material and tie with a rubber band to keep things from coming undone.
Prepare yourself:
Kids can be great helpers. Just make a game of the quick clean up, and plan for a food activity (snacks or dessert time) afterwards to make sure everyone has the proper incentive to clean up quickly! If you just want the kids out of the way after handwashing is over, send them to get their snack or dessert while the grown-ups scoop and toss the crafting messes.
Here’s another idea you might want to consider: installing an outdoor hot-and-cold water faucet for even greater ease and flexibility during work or play time. It’s a specialty of the house here at Norhio Plumbing, so call today for a free estimate or to schedule installation. You’ll thank us all year long for the added convenience it can provide.
