Plumbing problems are always a nuisance here in Aurora and Twinsburg, and always seem to strike at the worst possible times. But with a little home detective work and maintenance along with periodic professional plumbing inspections, you can minimize the risk of “Murphy’s Law” moments from happening. (In case you don’t recall Murphy’s Law, by the way, it’s essentially this: “What can go wrong will go wrong!”)
Here are a few of the more common plumbing problems we encounter and how you can go about detecting them:
- Check for signs of leaking water. When it’s time to clean behind your refrigerator, for example, check for any signs of water, including water stains on the floor or molding. The smaller the puddle the greater the concern as that could mean water is seeping into and through your floor boards. Also, any water leakage probably means there’s a leak in your ice maker or the tube feeding it.
- Look for any signs of water leaking under your kitchen sink. Again, do a thorough cleaning job every month or so by removing every item from under your sink as water leaks are not always front and center.
- If you spot a wet area in your yard when there hasn’t been any rain in a while, that could be a sign of a leak or crack in your sewer line.
- If you even suspect a water leak indoors or outdoors, turn off your home’s water main before going to bed one night – or when leaving home for the day – and take the exact reading from your water meter at the same time. If the reading has advanced when you turn the water main back on, you have a leak.
- Do you find yourself using more soap and shampoo to keep your body and hair clean? Are you having to use more laundry detergent than usual? If so, hard water can be the cause which, if left unchecked, can eventually to pipe corrosion and worse.
