Today’s vocabulary lesson includes the words fad, trend, and classic. In short, a fad can be described as short-lived. It can last for a season or as little as a month. A trend has a longer lifespan and can sometimes become a classic or be an update on a classic. Which brings us to classic Home Upgrades . This is something that stands the test of time, and while it might be updated here and there, a classic is forever.
So, when it comes to updating your home, how do you know which projects are worth pouring blood, sweat, and tears (and money) into and which ones you might regret in 5 or 10 years? Here are five upgrades to think twice about before implementing them.
Sliding Barn Doors –
A popular trend in the country cottage and modern farmhouse styles, barn doors lend a rustic, casual look to a room. But many designers feel the look has been overdone and it’s time to put the barn doors back in the barn where they belong. Plus, they don’t do a great job of blocking sound between spaces – making them less than suitable for a bedroom or bathroom.
White-on-White Décor –
Yes, the color white is timeless and can make a space look airy, light, and expansive. But keeping an all-white space clean can be a challenge, especially in the kitchen or bath. For this reason, designers and decorators are embracing colored cabinets, counter tops, and flooring. Still love white? Use it on walls, a backsplash, or in accent pieces.
Dedicated Spaces –
We’ve changed the way we live, work, and play, and home design has stepped up to meet our needs with combination kitchen/dining areas, family rooms, and rec rooms. And while the complete open-concept idea isn’t for everyone, you can strike a happy balance by removing a wall that separates the kitchen and dining room or make the opening between the two rooms larger.
Concrete Countertops –
Concrete countertops offer a unique look, but because concrete is porous, it needs to be sealed more often than you might like. Also, it tends to soak up stains and is more susceptible to cracking over time.
Brass Fixtures –
Brass is the look of the moment for faucets, shower heads, and other fixtures. But just like rose gold, we don’t expect it to remain a trend for long. When remodeling your kitchen or bath, stick with timeless finishes like stainless steel or chrome, unless you won’t mind living with brass or any other trendy finish five years from now.
