Our homes have a way of letting us know that something has gone array and needs attention. The drip-drip of a leaky faucet, the banging sound coming from the water heater, or the phantom flush of a toilet. But how to you know there’s a potential Plumbing Problems without a sound to tip you off? Here are 7 silent signs to be alert to:
1. Slow Drains
Every home owner experiences a slow drain every so often. But if you have multiple slow drains at the same time, it could be a sign of a bigger issue like tree roots blocking the sewer line.
2. Discolored Pipes
Take a tour of exposed pipes and note any signs of discoloration, especially where pipes are joined together. This could indicate a leak from a sink or drain line, or a slow leak in the supply line. If it’s the latter, contact a plumbing professional right away before that slow leak turns into a big, costly mess.
3. Low Water Pressure – A slower than usual stream of water from one location, like your kitchen sink, might signify an issue with the aerator. If you notice low water pressure in more than one location, it could have something to do with the water main, water heater, or a leak in the supply line. All reasons to take immediate action.
4. No Water – A sudden drop in water pressure, or worse – no water at all – during the winter months could mean your pipes have frozen. If you can locate the pipe or pipes in question, use a blow dryer or space heater to slowly thaw the ice and get water moving again.
5. A Spike in the Water Bill – If nothing in your household has changed to justify an unusually large increase in your water bill, chances are you have a leak. Check all toilets and the pipes under your kitchen and bathroom sinks for signs of a leak. Even without such evidence, you still might have a leak that can’t be seen without professional investigation.
6. Bubbling Paint – Notice bubbling or brown spots on your walls or ceiling? It’s a telltale sign of moisture and could be caused by a roof or plumbing leak.
7. Sewer Odor – If you notice the smell of sewer gas in your home, perhaps a drain trap has run dry or a vent line has cracked.
