So you just bought a New Home. “Woo hoo,” right? Hey, you deserve to celebrate – after all, buying a home isn’t something you do every day.
But once the confetti all settles to the ground, it’s time to make this new home all yours, especially if you bought it from previous owners. So, to help out with the transition from “theirs” to “ours”, here are some handy tips we’re confident you’ll find useful, if not downright essential.
Making Your New Home Truly Yours: Essential Transition Tips
- You never know how many copies of your old keys are floating around or who has them. So change the locks and make a spare key for someone you trust for the day you inevitably
lock yourself out.
- Prevent serious burns and scalds, and save money on your utility bill by making sure the temperature of your hot water heater is set to no more than 120 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Check faucets, showerheads, toilets, and under-sink plumbing for signs of leaks. Leaks not only waste water, but can cause structural damage if not tended to quickly enough.
- Make sure all vents and registers are free of dust, debris, and obstructions. Clean, unblocked vents mean improved airflow and better heating and cooling system efficiency.
- Get to know your home’s major systems. Know where to locate – and shut off – the main water valve, furnace pilot light, and circuit breaker.
- As a house settles, small cracks in the foundation can form. If you notice any, mark the top of the crack with masking tape and write today’s date. Periodically, check to see if the crack is growing over the top of the masking tape. If so, contact a professional to assess the problem.
- Develop a plan to make your home as energy efficient as possible. This should include installing LED bulbs, choosing energy-efficient appliances, sealing all air leaks, and maybe even planting shade trees.
