Plumbing problems can pop up without warning. One minute you’re belting out tunes in the middle of a nice, hot shower, and then standing under freezing cold water the next. Or those times when plumbing provides little hints that something is amiss and might require the expertise of a licensed plumber. The question is, are we paying close enough attention to act on time?
Here are 9 ways your home is telling you that you Need a Plumber.
Sudden reduction in water pressure.
Low water pressure can make everyday tasks – like washing dishes or showering – painfully slow. If you notice your water pressure taking an unexplained dip, contact a plumber to find out why.
Slow moving drains.
It’s normal to experience the occasional clogged drain due to a build-up of soap scum, fats, hair, and other debris. But if every drain in your home is not draining water as quickly as it once did, you could have a clogged sewer line.
Foul odors from drains.
Speaking of drains, all that gunk could lead to some interesting odors over time. But a foul odor that lingers long after cleaning could be due to a blocked or cracked sewer line.
Rattling sound in pipes.
Aside from the sound of moving water when plumbing is in use, your pipes should remain silent. Rattling sounds can be caused by poorly secured pipes or because of “water hammer”, a condition that occurs when the flow of water changes course or stops abruptly (after someone shuts off a faucet, for example), creating a shock wave that leads to banging noises.
Higher than normal water bills.
Unless you’ve drastically increased water usage or have been notified of an extra charge by the water company, your bill should remain relatively constant from month to month. If you notice a sudden spike, you likely have a leak in the plumbing system that should be investigated and repaired.
A gurling toilet long after being flushed.
When not in use, a toilet shouldn’t make a sound. Yet if yours gurgles, pay attention as it could be a sign of a blocked vent stack or a blocked sewer line.
Repeatedly clogged toilet.
We all break out the plunger occasionally. But if it seems like yours is a frequent occurrence you could be facing a clogged sewer or a back-up from your septic system.
Mold growth.
Mold thrives in areas with excess moisture. If you notice it on your ceiling, walls, or inside cabinets, you might have a leaky pipe which needs to be found and repaired as quickly as possible to prevent more damage.
Brown spots on ceiling.
Stains of any sort on a ceiling are unsightly. But brown spots with plumbing above the ceiling are sure signs of a water leak. Locate and repair the source of the problem before patching and painting the ceiling.
