The occasional home plumbing repairs are inevitable. And there are plenty of those that can be handled going the DIY route, provided you have the right tools, even a little of mechanical aptitude, and the inclination to at least give it a try .
But happens when you can’t do it yourself? Do you have a professional plumber you can trust, right now, to do the job for you? Or do you resort to the old “close your eyes and point” selection technique?
Well, we think the selection process should be a little more involved than that. And the time to choose a plumber is before you actually need one.
So here are 10 things to keep in mind when hiring a plumber.
- Ask your friends, family members, and neighbors who they recommend. Chances are, they’ll be happy to share the good – and the not-as-good – with you.
- Make sure any plumber you consider hiring is licensed and insured. That protects you and your home should anything go wrong, along with the plumbing company (and its employees) itself.
- See if they are members of the Better Business Bureau and check if they have any claims filed against them and how those claims were resolved.
- Ask how long they have been in business and the average length of employment of their staff. While everyone has to start somewhere, experience speaks volume in this industry.
- How well trained and experienced are the plumbers who work for the company? Are they licensed, have they earned special accreditations, and does the company insist on ongoing training for its technical crew?
- Can they handle a broad scope of work, from clogs to home remodeling to room additions?
- Make sure they offer written estimates prior to beginning any work. Surprises can be fun, but not when it comes to you hard earned money.
- Because home repair emergencies can occur at any time, and on any day of the week, ask whether they provide 24-hour service, work weekends, and if they charge more for work performed after normal business hours.
- Are they willing to provide references? A solid and trustworthy company will be more than happy to let you see and hear what others have to say about their current and past performance.
- Consider how they treat you on the phone. This is, after all, a service industry. And their representatives should be happy to answer all your questions and make you feel important. Because you are.
