It’s a topic hotly debated in many households. It might even be a source of contention in yours. In fact, the issue is so controversial that it supposedly generated the most letters to Dear Abby on a single subject. We’re talking about the right way to Toilet Paper Hang.
Should it go with the sheets hanging over the roll, or under? Well, if you are on “team over”, you’re not alone, as a vast majority believe over is the absolute right way to hang toilet paper. But those on “team under” have some valid arguments.
The Case for Over the Roll
If you purchase patterned or printed toilet paper, you won’t be able to see the design if the sheets go under or behind the roll, or it will appear upside down. This might not be earth shattering news, but enough to tick of those who prefer things just right. Of course, toilet paper manufacturers could come out with a line of paper printed on both sides, or just the underside to satisfy consumers in the “under” camp.
Some argue that because hotels hang toilet paper over with the tip neatly folded, this is the right way. And who’s a more qualified and trusted source then the industry who perfected the making of a bed?!
Perhaps the most notable reason is health related. The moment when a bathroom user’s hands are most likely to carry bacteria is when they reach for the toilet paper. If the paper is hung over, their hand only touches the sheets they’ll be using, which will be flushed. However, if it’s hung under, the user runs the risk of picking up bacteria and leaving more.
The Case for Under the Roll
The biggest reason some prefer “under” is to prevent kids and pets from unspooling it. If you’ve ever seen the aftermath of a child’s or pet’s playtime with the toilet paper roll, you know exactly what we mean, and how utterly futile it is to attempt rolling it back up.
The Third Camp
Then there are those who have hangers that hold paper toilet rolls vertically. And those who don’t hang their roll at all…just place it on the bathroom counter or behind the toilet. Should it go to the left, or the right? Maybe it depends which side of the toilet the roll is on. Or maybe it just doesn’t really matter.
