When water flows to the wrong place at the wrong time – as it would from a cracked or Prevent Leaking Pipes – it can cause extensive damage to your home and personal belongings. Even a slow drip behind a bathroom or kitchen cabinet can cause rotting sheetrock and wood floors.
What causes pipes to crack, leak or burst? Let’s have a look.
1. Frozen Pipes
Water pipes located in unheated areas are practically inviting trouble. To prevent
an ugly and expensive mess, have your pipes insulated to protect them from
freezing. Before winter sets in, disconnect and store hoses and shut off the water
supply to outdoor faucets.
2. Leaky Pipes
Even the smallest of pinholes can’t fix themselves, but they can grow and
become even more problematic. It’s okay to apply tape as a short-term fix, but
don’t wait too long before implementing a more permanent solution, including
professional pipe repair or replacement.
3. Unattended Drain Clogs
If a clogged drain is left unattended for too long, water pressure will build and
could force the pipe to crack and leak.
4. Corroded Pipes
The metal pipes in older homes become increasingly prone to internal corrosion.
Constant exposure to soil, water, and temperature fluctuations also can do a
number on your pipes, as can build-ups of mineral deposits like calcium and
magnesium. To help prevent corrosion, substitute green alternatives for the
chemical drain cleaning solutions you might still be using.
5. Check Your Water-Using Appliance.
As your appliances age, so do their components; one consequence of this is
broken seals. There are seals that are applied to your water connectors when
your appliances are installed and after years of use, these seals wear down or
break– which, as you could probably guess, causes leaks. As a preventative
measure, plan to regularly check the water seals on your washing machine,
dishwasher, refrigerator, toilets and water heater.
