Well, just as there are different degrees of hiding for people, the same goes for leaking water. You might say about a leaking faucet, for example, that it wants to get caught. There’s nothing sneaky or hidden about it. The only question is: when do you get around to fixing it to stop the waste of water and before the leak gets any worse.
The “grown up” version of a water leak, you might say, are the hidden variety: those that take place where they often cannot readily be detected unless by happenstance. So does that mean you just sit back and take whatever your water pipes and fixtures have to dish out? Of course not. It simply means that, first, you have to know what to look for and, secondly, be on the lookout for hidden water leaks on a semi-regular basis.
Here are the most common signs of hidden water leaks:
- Water pooling up behind your fridge, usually indicating a leak from the water line that feeds your ice maker
- The formation of mold on an interior wall or ceiling, behind which plumbing exists
- A mushy patch of lawn when all else is dry
- An outrageously high water bill
- A musty odor that you can’t account for
All that stuff is easy enough to watch out for, including water under or behind your fridge. Simply pull it away from the wall every month or so for routine cleaning and a quick inspection.
